For many families, the hours between the end of the school day and dinner can be challenging. Children need a safe place to go, parents need dependable care, and after spending much of the day in a classroom, kids need opportunities to move, socialize, learn, and recharge.
At OMAC Martial Arts, our After-School Program is designed to make those hours meaningful. Across our OMAC locations in Ontario, we combine Taekwondo training with structured, screen-free activities such as chess, music, reading, homework time, games, physical activities, and creative learning.
The goal is simple: give children an environment where they can stay active, engaged, and connected—without spending the afternoon on a phone, tablet, television, or video game.
Why Structured After School Time Matters
Children often have several hours between school dismissal and when their parents finish work. Without a routine, it can be easy for much of that time to turn into passive screen time.
A structured after-school program provides a predictable routine while still giving children a change of pace from their regular school day.
At OMAC, students have opportunities to participate in activities that encourage them to think, move, create, communicate, and build new skills. Rather than relying on devices for entertainment, children can interact with instructors and friends in person.
This balance is an important part of the OMAC After-School experience.
More Than Martial Arts
Taekwondo is at the heart of OMAC, but our After-School Program goes beyond martial arts training.
Depending on the daily schedule and location, structured activities can include:
Chess and Strategy Games
Chess encourages children to slow down, think ahead, solve problems, and make decisions. It can also be a fun way for students of different ages and skill levels to interact.
Music and Creative Activities
Music and creative activities give children another way to express themselves. They can help make the afternoon engaging while introducing students to interests outside of academics and martial arts.
Reading and Homework Time
Dedicated quiet time gives students an opportunity to work on homework, read, or complete school-related tasks before heading home.
Physical Games and Activities
After sitting in a classroom for much of the day, kids are ready to move. Organized games and physical activities help children stay active while encouraging teamwork and participation.
Taekwondo Training
Regular martial arts training gives students an opportunity to develop their Taekwondo skills while working on qualities such as focus, discipline, perseverance, respect, and confidence.
Together, these activities create a more balanced afternoon than simply keeping children occupied until pickup.
Helping Families Reduce Device Time
Phones, tablets, gaming systems, televisions, and computers are a normal part of children’s lives. The goal doesn’t necessarily have to be eliminating technology altogether. Instead, families can benefit from creating parts of the day when children have meaningful alternatives to screens.
After school is an ideal opportunity.
When children have a chess game to finish, a Taekwondo class to attend, friends to interact with, homework to complete, or an activity to participate in, they have something engaging to do without automatically reaching for a device.
At OMAC, we want children to experience what an active and socially connected afternoon can look like.
Building Focus Through Different Types of Activities
Focus isn’t developed only by sitting quietly.
Different activities challenge children to pay attention in different ways. During Taekwondo, students listen for instructions and practise techniques. During chess, they consider their next move. During music or creative activities, they follow patterns and explore ideas. During group games, they need to understand rules and cooperate with others.
These experiences can help children practise concentration in ways that feel natural and enjoyable.
Creating More Opportunities for Face-to-Face Connection
Reducing recreational device time also creates more opportunities for children to communicate with one another.
In an after school environment, children can make friends, participate in group activities, practise teamwork, learn how to win and lose respectfully, and interact with instructors and other students.
These everyday experiences can play an important role in developing communication skills and independence.
A Routine Designed for Busy Families
For working parents, an after-school program needs to be enriching for children—but it also needs to be practical.
OMAC’s After-School Program combines school pickup, supervised care, martial arts training, structured activities, and convenient pickup options in one program.
For full-time After-School members, PA Day Camps are also included, helping families maintain a more consistent childcare routine when schools are closed for PA Days.
Instead of coordinating transportation between multiple activities, families can have martial arts training and after-school enrichment built into the same routine.
Martial Arts + Learning + Play
One of the biggest advantages of a structured after-school environment is variety.
Children don’t necessarily need another full afternoon of academics after school. They also don’t need several hours of passive entertainment.
A balanced routine can include:
Movement + Learning + Creativity + Socialization + Rest + Martial Arts
At OMAC, we aim to create that balance so children can enjoy their afternoons while continuing to develop important life skills.
